Experiments with the Eurospider Retrieval System for CLEF 2001

چکیده
Eurospider participated in both the multilingual and monolingual retrieval tasks for CLEF 2001. Our multilingual experiments, the main focus of this year’s work, combine multiple approaches to cross-language retrieval: machine translation, similarity thesauri, and machine-readable dictionaries. We experimented with both query translation and document translation. The monolingual experiments focused on the use of two fundamentally different stemming components: one commercially and one linguistically motivated stemmer.

Eurospider at CLEF 2002
For the CLEF 2002 campaign, Eurospider participated in the multilingual and German monolingual tasks. Our main focus was on trying new merging strategies for our multilingual experiments. In this paper, we describe the setup of our system, the characteristics of our experiments, and give a first analysis of some of the results.
متن کاملExperiments with the Eurospider Retrieval System for CLEF 2000
This paper describes the experiment setup that we used for our CLEF participation and gives a preliminary analysis of the results that were obtained. We participated in the multilingual and monolingual tasks with three runs each. For our experiments, we investigated query translation using different approaches, as well as document translation. A main focus was the use of so-called similarity th...
متن کاملIR-n, a Passage Retrieval System from University of Alicante, at Clef 2001
Previous works showed that the use of document passages like basic unit of information, to calculate the relevance of a document to a question, improve the results of the information retrieval systems sensibly. However, IR community has not arrived to a consent about how to define those text passages so that the system can improve the efficiently. This paper reports on experiments with IR-n sys...
متن کاملExeter at CLEF 2001: Experiments with Machine Translation for Bilingual Retrieval
The University of Exeter participated in the CLEF 2001 bilingual task. The main objectives of our experiments were to compare retrieval performance for different topic languages with similar easily available machine translation resources and to explore the application of new pseudo relevance feedback techniques recently developed at Exeter to Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR). We also...
متن کاملJHU/APL Experiments at CLEF: Translation Resources and Score Normalization
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory participated in three of the five tasks of the CLEF-2001 evaluation, monolingual retrieval, bilingual retrieval, and multilingual retrieval. In this paper we describe the fundamental methods we used and we present initial results from three experiments. The first investigation examines whether residual inverse document frequency can improv...
